ANOTHER JESUS

The Apostolic Warning

The Scripture stands as a sentinel at the gate of truth, sounding an alarm that echoes across the centuries with undiminished urgency. In 2 Corinthians 11:4, the Apostle Paul writes with grave concern, "For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough." This is not a casual observation. It is a prophetic warning, a spiritual siren, a clarion call to vigilance. Paul had invested his life in preaching the authentic Jesus, the Jesus he encountered on the road to Damascus, the Jesus who spoke to him from heaven, the Jesus whose resurrection he had witnessed in the lives of transformed believers. And now he sees the Corinthian church tolerating counterfeits with alarming ease.

The Bible warns us about being led astray. This warning is not born of paranoia but of love. God knows the human heart's capacity for deception. He knows that the enemy specializes in counterfeits that bear a superficial resemblance to the truth. If you have followed another Jesus, you would have expressed a different spirit, and thus you would be holding to a different gospel than the one Paul preached. The three elements are inseparably linked. A false Jesus produces a false spirit, and a false spirit proclaims a false gospel. You cannot have the right spirit while worshipping the wrong Jesus. You cannot preach the true gospel while being animated by a deceptive spirit. The chain of truth is only as strong as its first link, and that first link is the identity of Jesus Christ Himself.

The Heresies Within

There are some organizations claiming to be Christian but preaching another Jesus. They wear the label of Christianity. They use Christian terminology. They quote Scripture selectively. Yet beneath the veneer of orthodoxy lies a fundamental distortion of the person and work of Christ. We must be aware of their organization's heresy, for ignorance in this matter is not innocence. It is vulnerability.

Some proclaim that Jesus Christ is Michael the Archangel. This teaching demotes the eternal Son of God to the status of a created being, an angelic being, albeit the highest among angels. It strips Him of His divinity, His eternal existence, and His unique relationship with the Father. An angel cannot save humanity. An angel cannot bear the infinite wrath of God against sin. An angel cannot be worshipped as God. To call Jesus an angel is to call Him something less than God, and something less than God is not the Jesus of the Bible.

Others teach that Jesus is a man and Christ is an ideal. This bifurcation destroys the unity of the person of Christ. It reduces the incarnation to a mere human existence and transforms the title "Christ" into an abstract concept rather than a divine identity. If Jesus is only a man, then His death has no more saving power than the death of any other martyr. If Christ is only an ideal, then salvation becomes self-actualization rather than divine rescue. This is not the Jesus who walked on water, raised the dead, and declared Himself to be the resurrection and the life.

Some declare that Jesus is the first of many spirit children of Elohim. This teaching multiplies divinity, making Jesus one among many rather than the one and only Son. It destroys the uniqueness of Christ, the exclusivity of His Sonship, and the sufficiency of His mediation. If there are many spirit children, then Jesus is not the only way to the Father. If He is merely the firstborn in a celestial family, then His preeminence is chronological rather than ontological. This is not the Jesus who said, "I and the Father are one."

Others present Jesus as like Santa Claus who, on demand, provides His people with health and financial prosperity. This reduces the Lord of glory to a celestial vending machine, a divine genie who exists to fulfill human desires. It inverts the Gospel, making God the servant of man rather than man the servant of God. It replaces the cross with comfort, sacrifice with self-indulgence, and discipleship with consumerism. This Jesus has no thorns, no nails, no blood, and no tomb. He is a Jesus of convenience, not a Jesus of redemption.

Some teach that Jesus' sacrifice on the cross was not sufficient to save us from all our sins. Consequently, a person who died with an unconfessed, small or venial sin is required to go to purgatory to make atonement for them and cleanse their soul. This teaching insults the finished work of Christ. It declares that the blood of the Son of God is inadequate, that the cry "It is finished" was premature, and that human suffering must supplement divine sacrifice. The cross becomes a down payment rather than a full settlement. The Gospel becomes a cooperative effort rather than a completed act of grace. This is not the Jesus who declared from the cross that the work of redemption was accomplished.

The Heresies Without

Some organizations do not claim to be Christian but do teach about another Jesus. Their deception is more obvious but no less dangerous.

Some teach that Jesus is a dead prophet. They acknowledge His existence, honor His teachings, but deny His resurrection. A dead prophet cannot hear prayer. A dead prophet cannot intercede. A dead prophet cannot return in glory to judge the living and the dead. This Jesus is a historical figure, not a living Savior.

Others teach that Jesus is a dead teacher or master. They admire His ethics, quote His parables, and seek to emulate His lifestyle. But they deny His deity, His atonement, and His resurrection. A dead teacher can inspire but cannot save. A dead master can instruct but cannot indwell. This Jesus is a moral example, not a divine Redeemer.

Some teach that Jesus was a prophet who did not die on the cross or was physically resurrected from the dead. They replace the historical crucifixion with a substitution, a swoon, or a spiritualized event. They replace the bodily resurrection with a vision, a myth, or a metaphor. But a Jesus who did not die has no atoning blood. A Jesus who did not rise has no conquering power. This Jesus is a religious figure, not the Lord of life.

The Real Jesus of the Bible

Who then is this real Jesus in the Bible? What are His attributes? The question is not academic. It is existential. The identity of Jesus determines the destiny of souls. The true Jesus is not a matter of opinion or preference. He is a matter of revelation and historical fact.

He is God who took on human flesh. John 1:14 declares with majestic simplicity, "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." The eternal Word, the second person of the Trinity, the agent of creation, became flesh. He did not merely appear to be human. He did not temporarily inhabit a human body while remaining detached from human experience. He became flesh. He dwelt among us. He lived, hungered, thirsted, wept, and died as a true human being. Yet He never ceased to be God. This is the mystery of the incarnation, the wonder of Emmanuel, God with us.

He was born by a virgin. Luke 1:34-35 records the angelic announcement to Mary. She asked with understandable perplexity, "How will this be, since I am a virgin?" The angel answered with divine authority, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God." This was not a natural conception. This was a supernatural intervention. The Holy Spirit, the power of the Most High, overshadowed a human womb and produced a child who was simultaneously fully human and fully divine. The virgin birth is not a mythological embellishment. It is the necessary foundation of the incarnation. A natural birth would have produced a mere human. A supernatural birth produced the God-man.

He is the one and only begotten Son of God. John 3:16 contains the most famous verse in Scripture for good reason. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." The term "only begotten" speaks of unique Sonship, of a relationship that has no parallel. Jesus is not one of many sons. He is the only Son in this sense. He shares the divine nature with the Father in a way that no created being can. He is the eternal Son, not a son by adoption or appointment, but Son by eternal generation. This is why belief in Him is the exclusive path to eternal life. No other being can accomplish what only the Son can accomplish.

Only He can save us from our sins. Acts 4:12 leaves no room for pluralism, no space for universalism, no tolerance for alternative saviors. "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." The exclusivity of Christ is not arrogance. It is necessity. Only the God-man can bridge the infinite chasm between holy God and sinful humanity. Only the sinless one can bear the penalty of sin. Only the infinite one can satisfy infinite justice. Any other name, any other path, any other savior is a counterfeit that leads to destruction.

He is alive and Lord over all things. Ephesians 1:20-23 describes His present exaltation with breathtaking grandeur. "That he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all." This Jesus did not remain in the tomb. He conquered death, ascended to heaven, and now reigns as Lord over every power, every authority, every dominion, and every name. He is not a memory. He is a presence. He is not a historical figure. He is the living Lord. He fills all things. He is the head of the church. He is the fullness of God in bodily form, and His body, the church, is the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

The Personal Examination

Are you preaching another Jesus? This is a question that must be asked with ruthless honesty. It is not enough to use the name of Jesus. It is not enough to speak of love, grace, and salvation. The question is, which Jesus are you proclaiming? Is He the Jesus of the Bible, or a Jesus of human imagination? Is He the eternal Son of God, or a created being? Is He the virgin-born God-man, or a mere human teacher? Is He the only Savior, or one of many paths? Is He the resurrected Lord, or a dead prophet?

You may have to check against Apostle Paul's writings, for he is the one who was inspired to write this very warning against those who preach another Jesus than the one he preached. Paul knew the authentic Jesus. He had met Him in blinding glory on the Damascus road. He had received revelation directly from heaven. He had planted churches and written epistles under divine inspiration. His Jesus is the standard by which all other claims must be measured.

The Call to Shine as Lights

Daniel 12:3 gives a glorious promise to those who remain faithful to the truth. "And those teaching do shine as the brightness of the expanse, and those justifying the multitude as stars to the age and for ever." Those who teach the true Jesus, who justify the multitude through the true Gospel, will shine with eternal brilliance. They will not be dimmed by the passing of ages. They will not be forgotten in the annals of history. They will shine as stars forever, because they have held fast to the truth in the face of deception.

Philippians 2:15 calls the church to be "blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world." We live in a crooked and perverse generation, a world awash with false christs, counterfeit gospels, and deceptive spirits. But in the midst of this darkness, the true church appears as lights. We shine not by our own brilliance but by reflecting the true Light of the world. We shine by knowing the real Jesus, loving the real Jesus, preaching the real Jesus, and defending the real Jesus against every counterfeit that seeks to replace Him.

The Jesus of the Bible is not another Jesus. He is the only Jesus. He is the eternal Son, the virgin-born Savior, the crucified Redeemer, the resurrected Lord, and the coming King. Hold fast to Him. Preach Him without compromise. Defend Him without apology. And you will shine as a star forever.
